Why Your Laundry Isn't Clean (And How to Fix It)

By Wedolaundry

You’ve done everything right — or so you thought. But your clothes keep coming out of the wash with stains that didn’t budge, a dull grey tinge on whites, or that vague “not quite clean” feeling that’s hard to describe but impossible to ignore.

Here’s the truth: most laundry problems come down to a handful of fixable mistakes. This guide walks through the most common reasons laundry doesn’t come out clean — and exactly what to do about each one.

The Real Reason Your Laundry Isn’t Getting Clean

1. You’re Not Pre-Treating Stains

Washing machines are excellent at refreshing and deodorizing fabrics, but they are not designed to dissolve set-in stains on their own. Grease, wine, coffee, blood, grass — these all require pretreatment before the wash cycle begins.

The Fix: Apply a stain remover, liquid detergent, or even dish soap directly to the stain and let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes before washing. For protein-based stains (blood, sweat, food), use cold water during pre-treatment — hot water sets these stains permanently.

2. You’re Sorting Incorrectly (or Not at All)

Mixing heavy items (jeans, towels) with lightweight fabrics (shirts, underwear) isn’t just a colour risk — it affects how thoroughly each item gets washed. Heavy items dominate the drum, restricting how lighter items move through the water. The result? Uneven cleaning.

The Fix: Sort laundry into at least three groups: lights, darks, and delicates/synthetics. Also separate heavily soiled items (workwear, gym clothes) from lightly soiled ones. Washing similar items together means every piece gets the right exposure to water and detergent.

3. You’re Using Hard Water Without Compensating for It

If you live in Calgary, Edmonton, or parts of the Greater Toronto Area, you likely have hard water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium that bind to detergent molecules, preventing them from working effectively. This is why whites go grey and colours look dull over time.

The Fix: Add a water softener additive (like borax or a commercial laundry booster) to each wash. Or simply use a detergent formulated for hard water. If limescale buildup is visible in your machine, descale it monthly.

4. Your Water Temperature Is Wrong for the Fabric

Using the wrong temperature doesn’t just risk shrinking clothes — it also affects how well they clean. Cold water may not dissolve powder detergent properly, and it won’t break down oils and grease effectively. But hot water can set certain stains and damage delicate fibres.

The Fix:

Hot (60°C+): White cottons, bed linens, towels, heavily soiled work clothes

Warm (40°C): Most everyday coloured clothing, synthetic blends

Cold (30°C or below): Delicates, dark colours, lightly soiled items

When in doubt, read the care label — it tells you everything.

5. Your Machine’s Drum Is Too Full (or Too Empty)

Overloading is the most common laundry mistake. Clothes can’t move freely in an overcrowded drum, which means water and detergent can’t penetrate the fabric properly. Paradoxically, washing a very small load in a large machine can also be inefficient — items don’t agitate against each other enough.

The Fix: Aim for a ¾ full drum as the ideal load size. Large items like duvets or sleeping bags should be washed alone or in pairs, and checked to ensure they’re fully submerged before starting the cycle.

6. You’re Using Low-Quality or Expired Detergent

Not all detergents are created equal. Cheap detergents often lack the enzymes needed to break down protein and oil-based stains, while expired detergent loses its cleaning potency over time. Using the wrong format (powder in a cold wash, for example) also dramatically reduces effectiveness.

The Fix: Use a quality enzyme-based liquid detergent for most loads — it dissolves reliably in all temperatures. Check the expiry date on your detergent, and store it in a cool, dry place to preserve its effectiveness. For extra cleaning power on tough loads, add an oxygen-based booster like OxiClean.

7. Your Washing Machine Needs Maintenance

A washing machine that hasn’t been cleaned regularly will actively re-contaminate your laundry. Biofilm (a layer of bacteria and soap residue) builds up in the drum, pump filter, and drainage system over time. You may notice a musty smell from the machine itself — a sure sign it needs attention.

The Fix: Clean the drum with a hot empty cycle and white vinegar or a commercial washing machine cleaner once a month. Remove and rinse the detergent drawer. Check and clean the pump filter every 3 months (usually located at the front base of the machine). Leave the door open between washes.

8. Drying Is Undoing Your Clean

Here’s one that often gets ignored: how you dry your clothes affects how clean they feel. Drying clothes in a humid room, piling them while still damp, or leaving them in the dryer too long can all introduce new odours or cause mildew growth — making freshly washed clothes smell musty within hours.

The Fix: Transfer clothes from the washer to the dryer within 30–45 minutes. Don’t over-dry synthetic fabrics (it damages fibres and creates static). If air-drying, ensure each item is fully separated and in a well-ventilated space.

When the Problem Goes Beyond Your Machine

Sometimes, the issue isn’t technique — it’s equipment. Older domestic washing machines, particularly top-loaders, often lack the drum speed and water pressure of commercial machines. They may not reach the temperatures shown on the dial, and their rinse cycles may be too short to fully remove detergent residue.

This is why clothes washed in professional-grade commercial equipment often come out noticeably cleaner than a home wash — even when you’ve done everything correctly.
